Local Beaches
The famous Vendée coast - referred to locally as the Côte-de-Lumière (Coast of Light) stretches along 13 kms with 8 kms facing south.
The Vendée is justifiably proud of its beaches. Most have achieved the blue flag for cleanliness and are typically gently sloping with fine golden sand. There is nothing like blue sea, golden sand and glorious sunshine to conjure up a picture of the ideal holiday and the Vendée has an abundance of all of them.
Miles of wonderful sandy beaches to explore just 10 mins away. Listed below are just some of our favourite and local beaches just minutes away by car, from your villa.
La Tranche sur Mer
Ideal for families with children as it's approved as a "Kids' Station", which means that the resort is a safe environment for children to play in. It has specialist equipment and entertainments which specifically cater for families. It is also ideal for those wishing to pursue water activities as it has a designated six-hectare area for water sports. The 'Circle Nautique Tranchais' (CNT) offers sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing and sand sailing.
Longeville sur Mer
This beach offers seven kilometres of sandy beaches, ideal for sunbathing and also superb for boating and surfing enthusiasts. Also enjoy the beautiful forest that hugs this part of the coast line - it's ideal for a picnic (picnic benches supplied opposite the main entrance to the beach) and there is absolutely no commerce at this beach - just sand and ocean as far as you can see!
La Terrière
With its fine sandy beaches and 'blue flag' awards, this beach a very popular choice for families with kids. It is protected from the winds by the island of Ile de Ré and has lifeguard surveillance making it a safe environment for children. There area couple of food outlets directly on the beach where you can grab some lunch (normally burger chips etc. plus a shaded terrace where you can enjoy a nice ice creams or cold drink!
La Rocher
A sandy beach with many rock pools at low tide, which are fun for the kids to explore.
Along the road lading down to the beach, there is an indoor arcade/games area, shops with local items (buckets/spades/clothes etc.) and some nice cafés/restaurants where you can grab dinner or lunch after a lovely day at the beach relaxing.
Les Conches
Another very popular sandy beach ideal for families with kids. On the beachfront there are surf schools and a couple of eating outlets that serve burgers, chips, ice creams & cold drinks as well as a surveillance tower. A definite top choice for most of our guests.
La Grière Plage
Perfect for those who prefer quieter beaches but still like their creature comforts! The beach is near the resort of La Tranche sur Mer, but even in the height of summer, it offers superb sand with a less frenetic atmosphere. Local cafés do a roaring trade in “Brioches Vendéennes”, a mouth-watering cross between bread and cake.
Needing feeding on the way back from the beach.....?
Surfing in the Vendee
The Vendée is recognised as one of the finest destinations in France for those who love to ride the waves and a round of the world championships is regularly held at La Tranche sur Mer. The long stretch of the Atlantic rollers together with gentle sloping beaches, the varied breaks and the long hours of sunshine make the Vendee ideal. It doesn't matter whether you are a seasoned surfer or a raw novice, the plethora of different breaks and surfing conditions along the 146 kilometres of coastline means that there is somewhere to suit all comers.
There are several surf schools in the Vendee where beginners can obtain instructions and these are ideal for children and adults alike. We personally recommend either Manu Surf School in Les Conches or Koa Surf School at La Tranche sur Mer.
There are also several great surf shops that cater for all surfing needs. Particularly good ones are at Les Conches, the Manu surf shop next to the BUD Cafe and Bud Surf shop in Longeville sur Mer.
